Maine.
Maine, bordered on the north by Normandie with Bretagne to the west, has changed hands many times over the centuries. The Romans held the territory in the 5th century. Guillaume le Conquérant (William the Conqueror) controlled these lands in 1064 before embarking on his invasion of England in 1066. In the 12th century it was Anjou, on its southern border, that ruled over Maine, then Naples and then the French by 1481.
Cows and pigs are raised in the region and they are fed by the wheat and corn grown in the low country that abuts the Paris Basin.
Our ancestors who emigrated from Maine are listed below. The dates reflect the year they arrived in Canada if known, otherwise it is the date of their earliest appearances in the records there:
- Anne Lagou (1670).
