On the border of France and Germany, Lorraine has been under the flag of both of those nations. Likewise, both languages are spoken in the region. At the time of Jean Bernard's departure it was ruled by the French.

Quiche Lorraine, a delicious egg pie made with smoked bacon and an aged cheese is a traditional dish, as is andouille sausage.
