Champagne.
Known for its bubbly wine, Champagne is located in northeast France. It had been part of the Crown lands since King Louis X took the throne, but the sparkling white wine was perfected during the reign of Louis XIV. It was his court who fed the rivalry between Champagne and Bourgogne (Burgundy) as both regions sought royal favor for their beverages.
Beginning in medieval times six fairs were held throughout the year drawing merchants from throughout Europe to trade in furs, textiles, spices and other commodities.
Nogent-sur-Seine sits at the final navigable portion of the Seine River. The site saw many battles and was laid to waste by Protestants during the Wars of Religion.
Our ancestors who emigrated from Champagne are listed below. The dates reflect the year they arrived in Canada if known, otherwise it is the date of their earliest appearances in the records there:
- Marie Richard (1669) Nogent-sur-Seine.
