A Miller.

By 1870 a New Enterprise.

According to the 1870 census Henry ran a mill in the Shenango Township about a mile south of New Castle. He had bought the property from Abraham Hartman, which included a stone house for his residence.

The 1872 Shenango Business Directory has an ad for "Henry Wolf, farmer, miller and proprietor of Wolf's Milk." Farmers relied on local mills to process their grains for sale. Wheat or corn was ground into flour by large stone wheels. Big Run River powered the grist mill which sat on the 14 acres of land he owned.

John, at 25, had recently married Elizabeth “Lizzie” Jones, 22. They lived close to his parents with their 5-month old daughter, our ancestor Lulu. His personal assets were reported as worth $240. Elizabeth's family was in nearby New Castle. John was a miller, no doubt working with his father. The record indicates he was eligible to vote.

John's older brother David was a hotel keeper in New Castle, and had added another child, Harry, age 7. David's third child, Charles, was born about 1871.

The Move to Ohio.

Henry sold the mill in the spring of 1873 to John Sechler. He and Sarah (or Sally) moved to East Palestine, Ohio in the company of their daughters. Our ancestor John remained in New Castle.

Henry Wolfe died November 18, 1878. In the 1880 census Sarah is found to be a widow living with her two youngest daughters Elizabeth, 24 and Nettie, 19, in East Palestine, Ohio where Elizabeth's husband John Book was a hotel keeper.

Sarah, or Sally, died in 1904 at the age of 87 and joined her husband in Glenview Cemetery.
